| Demonstration Topics | Ceramics | Career | I was first introduced to Ceramics at school while studying under David Hinson at Rawlins Community College in Quorn, Leicestershire. At 'A'level I specialised in coil building one-off pots. In 1996 I went on to Canterbury Christ Church University College where I gained my degree in Art and Social Science. While at University, under the guidance of Maggie Williams, I began learning to throw in porcelain, which enabled me to experiment in the tactile qualities of the individual forms I make. I have a great love of glazes and while at University I enjoyed formulating exciting reduction glazes such as the elusive Copper Red, pure Celedons, dark Tenmokus and deep blues. In 1999 I moved Warwickshire to complete a two year apprenticeship at Whichford Pottery. While working at Whichford I learnt to throw and use hand-pressed techniques in which they specialise. I also attended a short college course on Ceramics (materials and processes) in Cheltenham, enabling me to continue formulating reduction glazes. I have also been lucky enough to spend some time training with John and Jude Jelfs at their studios in Bourton on the Water. I am now setting up my own studio which at present means that I am limited to using only oxidation glazes. My main area of interest is to explore form. I make a variety of semi-functional coil built vessels all of which are unique and a selection of thrown functional pieces. I enjoy glazing them with an exciting and vibrant blue glaze. My aim is to make cheerful pots for people to enjoy. |
