They create a picture inside a rectangle: of paper, canvas, board; mounts and frames. Every composition has to work with this rectangle: making shapes against the straight edges and the corners; using patterns that divide up the rectangle in a pleasing way. Seeing a subject framed in a rectangle, before you start drawing, shows you the possibilities of making a good composition. The Optivu® Adjustable Viewfinder is designed to help you do this. When you pick up the Optivu® Adjustable Viewfinder, you’ll see that the two halves slide over each other. You can make it big (up to 6” x 6”) or small (down to zero); you can vary the shape, from a square to any rectangle of any proportion. Look through the Optivu® at your subject (landscape, still life, or figure). One rectangle may not give a good composition, but change the proportion of the rectangle and your subject starts to work. Used this way, the Optivu® Adjustable Viewfinder will tell you the proportions of paper, canvas or board to use. Alternatively, match the Optivu® to the paper you’re using. It will match any format, with a special scale to help you. The subject that appears in your viewfinder will then be in exactly the right proportion to go onto your paper. Use the Optivu® to experiment. If you want to be traditional, the Optivu® will quickly find a Golden Section (and it’ll create a Golden Section rectangle, too). Alternatively, use an unconventional rectangle (as did, say, Ivon Hitchens). Do abstracts, of different sections of a subject. The more you use the Optivu®, the more you’ll develop the habit of seeing how your composition will look when framed. |
